Using Thai ATMs: How to Avoid the 10% Currency Conversion Trap (2026 Warning)

Never accept Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at Thai ATMs. Always select "Without Conversion" or "Decline Conversion" to save up to 10% on every cash withdrawal.

While credit card acceptance is growing rapidly across shopping malls and upscale rooftop bars, cash in Thai Baht (THB) remains essential for street food markets, massage shops, island ferries, and local nightlife.

However, withdrawing cash from foreign bank cards at Thai ATMs can result in heavy hidden charges if you aren't careful. In this guide, we explain how Thai ATMs operate and how to avoid the notorious Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markup fee.

1. The Mandatory 220 THB Foreign Card ATM Fee

Every major commercial bank in Thailand—including Kasikornbank (KBank) ↗, Bangkok Bank ↗, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) ↗, and Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri) ↗—charges a mandatory 220 THB fee (~$6.20 USD) per transaction on foreign debit/credit cards.

💡 Money-Saving Rule: Maximize Single Withdrawals

Because the 220 THB fee is charged per withdrawal regardless of the amount:

  • Avoid making small 1,000 THB or 2,000 THB cash withdrawals.
  • Withdraw the maximum single limit (Yellow Krungsri ATMs allow up to 30,000 THB per transaction; KBank and SCB allow up to 20,000 THB). This minimizes the 220 THB fee to less than 0.7% of your total withdrawal.

2. The Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Trap: How Tourists Lose 10%

When your card is processed at a Thai ATM, the screen will display a prompt similar to this:

"Would you like to be charged in your home currency (USD / EUR / GBP / AUD) at our guaranteed exchange rate?"

This trap is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). If you press "YES" or "ACCEPT CONVERSION":

  1. The ATM bank calculates its own arbitrary exchange rate, adding a 6% to 10% hidden profit margin on top of mid-market exchange rates.
  2. Your home bank is bypassed, costing you $20 to $50 extra on a standard cash withdrawal!
  3. 🛑 The Golden Rule at Thai ATMs:

ALWAYS SELECT: "DECLINE CONVERSION", "WITHOUT CONVERSION", or "CONTINUE IN THB".

When you decline conversion, the transaction is processed natively in Thai Baht (THB), allowing your home bank or digital card provider (like Wise or Revolut) to apply the true official mid-market exchange rate.

    3. Alternative Option: Currency Exchange Booths

If you bring physical cash (USD, EUR, GBP, SGD) into Thailand, exchanging physical notes at authorized currency exchange booths is often cheaper than ATM withdrawals.

    • Top Exchange Provider: SuperRich Thailand ↗ (look for the bright orange or green booths).
    • Airport Tip: Avoid the airport arrival hall exchange desks. Instead, take the airport train elevator down to the Suvarnabhumi Airport Train Station Basement (B Level) next to the Airport Rail Link entrance, where SuperRich operates booths offering official city mid-market rates!
